At the 70th anniversary of General de Gaulle’s famous “Call to the Free French” from London on 18th June 1940, thousands of spectators including President Sarkozy and the British Prime Minister David Cameron witnessed a flypast by an RAF Spitfire accompanied by an RAF Typhoon and a French Air Force Dassault Rafale. The Rafale was from l’escadrille BR66 which carries the emblem of the “Guyenne” squadron formerly 346 French Squadron RAF Bomber Command, based at Elvington. The aircraft flew over a special ceremony at the Royal Hospital Chelsea attended by a wide range of national and international guests, including representatives of the Yorkshire Air Museum & Allied Air Forces Memorial. Films about Elvington’s two French squadrons are being shown at the Institute Francais in Kensington.
